The Great Storm

The bear market will pass, like every storm. What remains is the memory of it and the resilience we built along the way.

The Great Storm is my artwork for every bear market: a reminder of what we hodl in our hands - a compass pointing the way to freedom.

Perspective

The inspiration for this artwork came while watching a documentary about Ferdinand Magellan, who in the 16th century led the first historically documented voyage around the world. Faced with the unknown, hardship, and seemingly impossible situations, he continued forward. By comparison, many of the problems we face today seem remarkably small.

Perhaps perspective is wisdom:

the weight of a problem depends on the world against which we measure it.

01

Nautical design

As always, I began this artwork with a rough sketch. This time, I tried to establish more of the details before moving on to the next steps. Since I know very little about nautical design, I had to do some research to create a ship that would at least make sense historically. I settled on a classic three-masted frigate from the 17th century, loosely inspired by the USS Constitution.

02

Watercolors before pen

The next major step was roughly painting over the sky and water using high-quality Schmincke HORADAM watercolors, including colors with fluorescent pigments. This was a crucial step, as it established the overall mood and tonal character of the artwork.

Details

Then came the detailed work. For this piece, I increasingly found myself working with a magnifying glass. It makes the process slower and more demanding, but it allows me to refine even the smallest details with greater precision and clarity.

04

Bitcoin-related insights

Keeping with tradition, I named the ship Liberty, or Libertas. As with all my works, I also hid a few subtle Bitcoin-related symbols and references throughout the artwork.

Final artwork

In the final artwork, the sky has a subtle glow under blacklight, adding another layer of mystery to the piece. It is another work in my series inspired by nature, where Bitcoin symbolism is integrated carefully and almost imperceptibly into the composition.
